Oaths and Promises!
I. A man’s word is his bond!
A. The foundations of ancient Jewish society were built on concepts like justice and truth. These ideas are important for maintaining peace. Where we have lies and non-truths, we have a disrupted peace.
B. Frivolous swearing on the sacred things of others was prohibited. Whether your own religion or that of someone else.
C. The cheaters – engaged in Evasive promises, or a belief in non-binding swearing.
II. We ought to understand that all promises are binding.
III. The Keeping of promises are a confirmation of a persons character.
IV. But this text claims that God is a witness to every oath!
V. Which brings about the question: are all oaths wrong??

2. The Kingdom idea then is to build a community where every man's transparent integrity removes any need for additional guarantees.
Matthew 5: 38-42.
II. LEX TALIONIS (Ex. 21: 23-25; and Deut. 19:21).
A. This is the worlds most ancient law
a. Code of Hammurabi - 2285 - 2242 B.C.
B. To limit ones vengeance is the beginning of mercy. This is the definition of justice for the Hebrew community. (Deut. 19:18).
C. But - this comment is set in the context of mercy. (See Lev. 19:18)!
D. THIS IS - Lex talionis (verse 39). We are to limit our vengeance by limiting our response!!! This is mercy!!!!! (Turn the other check).
E. SO-----what about my tunic?????
a. See Exodus 22:26-27 and 1st Cor. 13:17.
1. A self refusal of ones rights.
2. That is, service to others that goes beyond demand.
F. We are to show love at the minimum and never allow it to be reduced. Walk the extra mile.
