The Greek New Testament, Lesson Two, Pronunciation and Accent

2.1a What Syllable of the Greek word is stressed?

2.1b What is the value of the definite article with the noun in a lexicon or sentence?

2.2a True/False: The exact way in which some Greek letters were pronounced in the New Testament is unsure.

2.2b One of the major arguments in favor of using modern pronunciation is its present day use. The argument that koine Greek may have sounded similar to modern Greek is demonstrated by the various textual variants of the Greek New Testament. ο and ω in many textual variants, are the basis of such discrepancy. Often manuscripts were copied when a person would dictate to scribes, and the scribes wrote what they heard. In the case of ο and ω (which are pronounced identical in modern Greek), one letter could easily be confused by another, especially when either letter would be appropriate.

2.2c What are the two values of the Erasmian system of pronunciation?

2.3a Greek has two breathing marks._____ represents the smooth breathing mark, and ____ represents the rough breathing mark.

2.3b Every Greek word beginning with a ____ or a ____ must have a breathing mark, and words that have an initial ____ must have a rough breathing mark.

2.3c The breathing mark is placed over the single ____ which begins a word or over the second ____of a diphthong which begins a word.

2.3d How does each of the breathing marks affect the pronunciation of a given word?

2.4 List the punctuation marks used in the Greek language by name and letter.

1.                                            3.

2.                                            4.

2.5a What is the purpose of an apostrophe in a Greek sentence?

2.5b____________occurs when a word ending with a short vowel drops the short vowel when followed by a word beginning with a vowel.

2.5c When two words appear together and elision occurs, how does this affect the pronunciation of these words?

2.5d _____involves the contraction of vowels, diphthongs, or a combination of the two at the end of one word and the beginning of a second words, causing the merger of the two vowels into one.

2.5e A(n) _______(´) is placed over the contracted vowel of crasis in order to retain the breathing marks of the second word.

2.5f________(´´) appears over the second of two vowels standing together to show that the vowels are pronounced separately and do not form a diphthong.

2.6a1 How do you determine the number of syllables in a word?

2.62 There are no specific rules for dividing Greek words into syllables. Name two general rules that may be followed.

2.6b1 What are the names for each of the last three syllables of a word? Demonstrate the names of the last three syllables of αδελφος below.

2.7a List the three accent marks by name and by letter.

1.          2.                 3.

2.7b Fill in the blank with the appropriate letter.

1. The _____accent represents the rising voice.

2. The _____accent represents the falling voice.

3. The _____accent can stand on any one of the last three syllables, and it will stand on long or short syllables.

4. The ____accent represents both the rising and falling voice.

5. The ____accent can stand on the ultima only; however, it can stand on long or short syllables.

6. The _____accent can stand on long syllables only and will occur only on the penult and ultima.

2.7c The fourth syllable from the end is rarely accented.

2.7d Where is the breathing mark placed when it stands on the same syllable as does the accent?
