The Continual Burnt Offering as it Related to Israel: Lev. 6:8-13, Exodus 29: 38-46; 2 Chron. 29: 6-8. 1

1. So far this study has focused on the law that dealt with the individual Israelite in his devotions to God.

2. The continual burnt-offering is for the nation as a whole and is to be made by the priest alone. - Lev. 6: 8-13; Exodus 29: 38-46.

A. A lamb with its meal and drink offering was to be offered each morning and another in the evening. (Numbers 28:5-7)

B. Intended to be a constant reminder and renewal of Israel's consecration to YHWH and a kingdom of priests.

C. Was to be a constant expression of Israel's worship to God.

D. It was a reminder of Israel's fellowship with God - Exodus 29: 45-46.

3. The ritual of the sacrifice is the same - that of consecration.

A. No sins are confessed by the priest in this offering.

B. The theme is devotion of the individual and the nation.

C. The spiritual Jew remembered the offering made each morning and identify with it.

D. Thus, it was not just priests worshiping God but priests leading the nation in worship.

4. The fires (lit by God) of the continual burnt offering must never go out.

A. Commanded three times. Lev. 6:8, 12,13.

B. Such would indicate that Israel had forgotten God.

C. See 2nd Chronicles 29:7-8 for the consequences of neglecting this obligation.

D. As with the regular burnt-offering, worship is never to be an occasional thing but constant reminder as the ashes were removed twice a day (morning and evening) the spiritual Jew was to renew himself.

5. Why did God later condemn in such scathing terms the burnt-offering?

A. Isaiah 1:11-20; Amos 5:21-24 are examples of this rejection.

B. They kept the external ritual even when there was no internal devotion.

C. Especially when the intent of the ritual is so expressive of deep devotion and love. (cf. Matthew 15:1-15 and think!).
