1"Do not let your heart be troubled; believe in God, believe also in Me. 2"In My Father's house are many dwelling places; if it were not so, I would have told you; for I go to prepare a place for you. 3"If I go and prepare a place for you, I will come again and receive you to Myself, that where I am, there you may be also. 4"And you know the way where I am going." 5Thomas said to Him, "Lord, we do not know where You are going, how do we know the way?" 6Jesus said to him, "I am the way, and the truth, and the life; no one comes to the Father but through Me. 7"If you had known Me, you would have known My Father also; from now on you know Him, and have seen Him." |
I. Verse 1___The Text says a great deal__________
1. Troubled__ ταράσσω The First of Three Verbs_________________
ταρασσ|έσθω
verb
3d singular present passive imperative
2. Believe___ πιστεύετε
3. Believe___(in me)__πιστεύετε
|
ταράσσω (tarassō 5015) [ trouble [verb] -ed, -est, -ethto stir up, to agitate, as water in a pool; of the mind, to stir up, trouble, disturb with various emotions.
|
Here is the point that should be made. Jesus is not trying to comfort His disciples about their personal sadness of His death as much as He is addressing their mission. They are not be be "deterred" from completing their mission. The thing that will keep them on goal is their belief system or "faith." The underlying theme is that their "faith" will allow them to rejoice in the the events of Jesus' hour (Jn. 14:28). They should and will recognize the final hour as the culmination of the work of God as He defeats the principalities and powers of this earth (Jn. 14:30).
II. VV. 2-5___The Word for mansions
|
μονή (monē 3438) 1. abode [noun] an abiding place, a mansion, a habitation 2. mansion -stay in a place; hence, an abiding place (this specific meaning occurs only in John 14:23). |
It might be noticed that many of the modern translations use the word "dwelling places" which as you can see is a legitimate translation. However, there is nothing wrong with "mansions".
A. Heaven is a prepared place for a prepared people. As we shall see, these statements are in the context of the Passover that is occurring. Jesus was the Passover Lamb (Ex. 23:20). See Hebrew Chart The Passover as the Lord's Supper
1. He must go away to prepare for our salvation.
2. He must go away to take captivity captive (Eph. 4:8) and triumph over principalities and powers.
3. He must go away and sit at the right hand of the Father to consistently minister for us.
B. In this we find Jesus preparing both the place and the people.
1. He cares for the weak (Heb. 2:14-18)
2. He intercedes (Heb. 4:15-16)
3. He chastens (Heb. 12:7-11)
4. He sends ministering angles (Heb. 1:14)
C. In this section of text Jesus tells the disciples that their relationship has just started. The promise of v.2 then is the same message as Jesus used in the foot washing. Jesus was going to be the host as well as the servant.
D. We also have the promise of Jesus that He will come again. (1st Thess. 4:16ff) That is, Jesus will never set foot on this earth again.
E. The place called heaven where Jesus was about to go has a “way” that must be traveled. Jesus had already told them that His way was the cross and any man who follows Him in this way must take up His cross daily (Lk. 9:23).
F. Verse 6___In verse 6 we have one of the great seven “I ams” of the gospel of John (cf. 6:48; 8:12; 10:9; 10:11; 11:25; and 15:1). Look at the unusual arrangement of this verse.
I am:
The way
The Truth
The life
This can be read as: I am the way and the way is the truth and the truth is the life. One ought not be separated from the other!
Here we are not speaking of physical life. (See Jn. 5:25; Eph. 2:1-7). (6b) Is an absolute of Christianity. We are not going to heaven without Jesus. There is no religion on the face of this earth that can save a person except through the Lord Jesus.
G. Verse 7___Once again we have the discussion of the Oneness of Jesus with the Father.
|
8Philip said to Him, "Lord, show us the Father, and it is enough for us." 9Jesus said to him, "Have I been so long with you, and yet you have not come to know Me, Philip? He who has seen Me has seen the Father; how can you say, 'Show us the Father'? 10"Do you not believe that I am in the Father, and the Father is in Me? The words that I say to you I do not speak on My own initiative, but the Father abiding in Me does His works. 11"Believe Me that I am in the Father and the Father is in Me; otherwise believe because of the works themselves. 12"Truly, truly, I say to you, he who believes in Me, the works that I do, he will do also; and greater works than these he will do; because I go to the Father. 13"Whatever you ask in My name, that will I do, so that the Father may be glorified in the Son. 14"If you ask Me anything in My name, I will do it. |
I. Verse 8___Philip longs to see God as any Jew might or all men for that matter. Yet, Philip obviously did not understand that He was looking at God.
II. Verse 9___Once again, one of the great doctrinal truths of the NT is express here. If you have seen Jesus, you have seen the Father. They are one.
III. Verse 10___Jesus says that He is "in the Father." Let's look at that a little closer.
|
A Translation of I am in the Father and the Father is in Me__(οὐ πιστεύεις ὅτι ἐγὼ ἐν τῷ πατρὶ καὶ ὁ πατὴρ ἐν ἐμοί ἐστιν; τὰ ῥήματα ἃ ἐγὼ) [Not believe I in the Father and the Father in Me__] Notice the word “en.” To translate it “in” the Father is justifiable but probably out of context. “Just as legitimate is the translation “with” the Father. Go back to verse one and see the the subject is matter is “where" Jesus is going. Jesus is going “where” the Father is and he will be “with” the Father, not in the Father. |
IV. Verse 11___ The "WORKS" of Jesus ought to be sufficient to create belief. But the context tells us that even some of his closest disciples still do not believe (i.e. Philip).
V. Verse 12___There is yet another reason why Jesus is going away. Using the "works" as a springboard for this conversation Jesus promises His disciples that they will do greater works.
|
Shall
he do also (κακεινος
ποιησε). Emphatic pronoun
εκεινος, "that
one also." |
Notice, it is the going and the sending of the Holy Spirit to the disciples that allows them to do greater works in quantity.
VI. Verse 13___He promises further that "whatever they ask in His name" (ask by the authority of).
|
|
|
|
A.
To pray "in the name of Jesus" is more than a ritualistic
formula. Any prayer to God must first be in harmony with the will of
God (cf. Lk. 11:2; Ist John 5:14-15). Thus, as some author has
pointed out, to "pray in the name of" is not to pray on the
basis of the name of Jesus but in union with the name (will) of
Jesus.
B. Some challenge this passage (consider v.12) on the
basis of to "whom is Jesus speaking." It is obvious that
this conversation is to the 11 in the upper room. Some observations
that should be made. First, back in V. 12 we were told that "He
who believes in me will do the works or even greater works" than
those of Jesus. The context here is very important.
1. In V. 8
Philip, one of Jesus' own disciples was an unbeliever. This fact sets
the tone for the conversation we find in v. 11.
2. At the heart of this discussion is things that are promised is Jesus' return to the Father, (v.12) so the context of this promise is "after the resurrection."
3. Now we have the general theme. Jesus is going to return to the Father. The disciples are promised that after He returns to the Father if they "believe" (unlike Philip) they are to be able to do works, even greater works than Jesus.
4. In order to help fulfill this promise we find that the "Helper" or "Holy Spirit" is promised to the disciples. (V.15).
|
15"If you love Me, you will keep My commandments. 16"I will ask the Father, and He will give you another Helper, that He may be with you forever; 17that is the Spirit of truth, whom the world cannot receive, because it does not see Him or know Him, but you know Him because He abides with you and will be in you. 18"I will not leave you as orphans; I will come to you. 19"After a little while the world will no longer see Me, but you will see Me; because I live, you will live also. 20"In that day you will know that I am in My Father, and you in Me, and I in you. 21"He who has My commandments and keeps them is the one who loves Me; and he who loves Me will be loved by My Father, and I will love him and will disclose Myself to him." 22Judas (not Iscariot) said to Him, "Lord, what then has happened that You are going to disclose Yourself to us and not to the world?" 23Jesus answered and said to him, "If anyone loves Me, he will keep My word; and My Father will love him, and We will come to him and make Our abode with him. 24"He who does not love Me does not keep My words; and the word which you hear is not Mine, but the Father's who sent Me. |
I. V. 15__"If you love Me___Obedience out of love is very different than obedience out of fear. It is the former that Jesus calls for and not the latter. Alternatively, one who does not keep the commandments of Jesus probably does not love Jesus at least as they ought. Our apostle has a great deal to say on this subject in his other epistles. In 1st John 2:5; 5:3, we are told that the one who keeps the words of Christ is a mature complete person and is known by God. But the one who professes to know God (AND the Christian community is full of those) and does not keep His commandments is a liar (1st. John 2:4).
II. V. 16__We are now introduced to what is sometimes referred to as the third party in the Godhead, the Holy Spirit.
A. Verse 15 is a condition to V.16. That is love and commandment keeping will result in V.16.
B. Verse 16__Jesus now promises the disciples the "helper" This is the Empowering of the Holy Spirit and not the indwelling of the Holy Spirit. This promise is one of the greatest proofs of the resurrection of Jesus Christ. That is, Jesus promised that after He was gone (endured the death, burial and resurrection) the Holy Spirit was to come and aid the disciples/apostles. As we see in Acts chapter two that indeed did happen.Since we see this aspect fulfilled we can know some things for sure. Jesus did die and was raised and as a result, the Holy Spirit was dispatched.

Rather than enter a protracted study on the Holy Spirit, we may just look at some notes from a class on
|
The Book of Acts is a wonderful chance to help people with the idea of the Holy Spirit and to try and clear up some confusion. But before I comment on that I want to give some general definitions not relating to the Holy Spirit that we are forced to confront in the Book of Acts. "The Day of the Lord." Always a judgment figure. We learn this from the Minor Prophets. Sometimes the expression is coupled with salvation but judgment is the idea. Acts 2:20 is the Destruction of Jerusalem in 70 A.D. according to the book of Joel. (Listen to the Wars of the Jews Here) Last Days." Never a reference to the time period we live in but always a reference to God's last days of a "Theocratic reign" over Israel. For example, look at Isaiah 2:2ff. The church of Christ was established in "the last days." Another example. Hebrews 1:2, Jesus lived and spoke in the "last days." The last days were 2000 years ago when God ended His relationship (as in the OT) with Israel. The Holy Spirit. The word "spirit" (πνεύμάтι) in the Greek text is never capitalized. The only way we ever know if the text is speaking about the Holy Spirit is context and the word Hagion (Holy) is in front of the word "spirit." This one fact makes all translations very subjective. Very often, the word "spirit" is used to express an attitude. "Blessed are the meek in spirit." Or in the LXX, Leviticus chapter 23, the Lord commanded the people to be assembled so that He might see who is in the "spirit of the day" (He wanted to check attitudes). In fact, I don't think that in Galatians the 5th chapter "the fruit of the Spirit, " should be capitalized but should be "the fruit of the spirit" or the outgrowth of the proper attitude. Then again, it could be the Holy Spirit since we know there was an apostle in the congregation distributing miraculous gifts of the Holy Spirit (See Gal. 3: 1-5), which means no one knows for sure. The Holy Spirit is found in the in the Book of Acts in two forms and can be easily identified by one of two names as we move through the Book.
To grasp this one, we must start in John 16:7ff. (or John 14:15ff.) with Jesus promising the apostles that after He was gone that "the Helper" the Holy Spirit" will come to their aid. Now we move to the last chapter of the book of Luke. This is after the resurrection. Jesus says in Luke 24:49, that He will send the promise of the Father if they (the apostles) go to Jerusalem and wait.--- This promise (the Holy Spirit) was going to come with "POWER." Thus, the empowering of the Holy Spirit. The Empowering of the Holy Spirit is always related to miraculous gifts and is found in most of the books of the New Testament. Now, notice Acts chapter 1, verse 8. They were to receive their POWER when the Holy Spirit came on them, which it did in Acts 2:1ff. The Empowering of the Holy Spirit was generally transfered by the laying on of hands. Acts chapter 6 is the clearest case of this. Notice that in Acts 6:5, Stephen already had the Holy Spirit - but in verse 6- they laid hands on him and in verse 8 he was full of POWER! In fact, Stephen had the INDWELLING OF THE HOLY SPIRIT before they laid hands on him and gave him the EMPOWERING OF THE HOLY SPIRIT by laying hands on him and gave him the ability to perform miraculous deeds.
The Indwelling of the Holy Spirit is what every Christian receives at baptism. This is also a biblical name. (The Spirit that dwells in you). For instance, passages like II Tim 1:14 could be the empowering of the Holy Spirit but most likely is a reference to both. James 4:5 is probably the Indwelling of the Spirit. The indwelling of the Holy Spirit is found all over the book of Romans. Particularly in passages as in Romans 8:26ff, we find the Holy Spirit making intercession for man with God. In 8:16, we find that the indwelling Spirit, is one way God identifies us as His. Now, what we are told about the Indwelling of the Holy Spirit? 1. We receive Him at baptism (Acts 2:38). 2. He is our seal (same as mentioned in Romans) Ephesians 1:13. 3. He is our Promise. When we were baptized we were promised the Holy Spirit and thus receiving it is the fulfillment of that Promise. Ephesians 1:13. 4. He is our guarantee. Those of us sealed with the Spirit have a guarantee. Ephesians 1:14 5. He is our Inheritance. - He is our rightful inheritance from God. 6. We can grieve the Holy Spirit. Eph. 4:30, that we received when we were baptized (Acts 2:38). In short, the Indwelling of the Holy Spirit is non-miraculous. We cannot do the wonderful works that Apostles did in the 1st Century but the Holy Spirit is real and alive within each of us. The Empowering of the Holy Spirit was a 1st Century phenomena used to establish church congregations and confirm the Word of God. It is gone and will not be back. See Hebrews 2:1-6. |
III. Verse 17___this verse tells us that the disciples had the indwelling of the Holy Spirit and were to receive the Empowering of the Holy Spirit. He will abide with them (the empowering) and He will abide in them (the Indwelling).
A. The Holy Spirit is "the Spirit of Truth"
B. Since the Holy Spirit is God, it is impossible for the Holy Spirit to represent anything other than God's truth.
IV. Verse 18___It might be noted that the context of the entire perocipe is stated here. Jesus plainly states that His conversation above has been with the disciples. It is my view since Jesus tells us this conversation is with the disciples and about their conduct after He is gone, we ought not generalize this to mean everyone. He is about to go to the cross and the Holy Spirit will replace His presence with the disciples. (See Acts Chapter two). It is also noted that Jesus says He will come to them, and yet it is the Holy Spirit that is promised. Once again we see unity in the Godhead.
V. Verse 19___Jesus speaks again of the cross. Notice, they will no longer see Him yet He lives. No only will Jesus live on, the disciples have the same fate.
VI. Verse 20__The final miracle and greatest of all was yet to come. The resurrection of Christ. "In that day" the day of the resurrection the disciple's fate is sealed. No longer can there be any doubts.
VII. Verse 21___A repeat of the conditions of discipleship and in context of receiving the Holy Spirit. One must KEEP the commandments of Jesus and by doing this we prove we LOVE Him.
VIII. Verse 22-23___I think this is a reference to the Indwelling of the Holy Spirit. It cannot be seen but just as the disciples had the indwelling of the Spirit, all Christians have it (Acts 2:38). In this manner Jesus reveals Himself to His own and not the entire world.
XI___Verse 24___This is a restatement of facts already presented. One must keep the Words of Christ in order to show we love Christ.
1. We are to drink of Christ's spirit (Jn. 7:37-39).
2. We are to be filled with the Spirit of understanding as to what is the will of the Lord (Eph. 5:17-19).
3. He is to dwell in us by faith (Eph. 3:17).
4. He lives in us by faith (Gal. 2:20).
5. We put on Christ by faith and obedience (Gal. 3:26-27).
6. The new man which is put within is renewed in knowledge after the image of Him that created Him (Col. 3:10).

25"These things I have spoken to you while abiding with you. 26"But the Helper, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in My name, He will teach you all things, and bring to your remembrance all that I said to you. 27"Peace I leave with you; My peace I give to you; not as the world gives do I give to you Do not let your heart be troubled, nor let it be fearful. 28"You heard that I said to you, 'I go away, and I will come to you ' If you loved Me, you would have rejoiced because I go to the Father, for the Father is greater than I. 29"Now I have told you before it happens, so that when it happens, you may believe. 30"I will not speak much more with you, for the ruler of the world is coming, and he has nothing in Me; 31but so that the world may know that I love the Father, I do exactly as the Father commanded Me Get up, let us go from here. |
I. Verse 25__Jesus is about to leave this world. This "leaving" is the reason He is saying these things.
II Verse 26__The Holy Spirit is promised to help them. He will teach as He did in Acts 2 and also help them remember.
III. Verse 27__Jesus leaves His disciples in peace. I think the peace He speaks of here is not worldly peace but eternal peace.
IV. Verse 28__This does not mean that Jesus is an inferior deity. The Father was greater than Jesus because Jesus voluntarily submitted to the will of the Father (Phil. 2:5-8).

I
go away, and I come (υπαγω κα
ερχομα), both futuristic presents
(7:33; 14:3,18). If you love me (ε ηγαπατε
με). Second-class condition with the imperfect active
of αγαπαω referring to present
time, implying that the disciples are not loving Jesus as they
should. You would have rejoiced (εχαρητε
αν). Second aorist passive indicative of χαιρω
with αν, conclusion of second-class condition referring
to past time, "You would already have rejoiced before this"
at Christ's going to the Father (verse 12). Greater than I (μειζων
μου). Ablative case μου
after the comparative μειζων (from
positive μεγας). The filial relation
makes this necessary. Not a distinction in nature or essence (cf.
10:30), but in rank in the Trinity. No Arianism or Unitarianism
here. The very explanation here is proof of the deity of the Son
(Dods). |
V. Verse 29___Jesus reminds the disciples that all things that we about to happen were the fulfillment of prophetic utterances. He here refers to Satan as being on his way.
V. Verse 30__Jesus had an independent will. He was one with the Father yet different. He obeyed the Father "so the world might know He loves the Father."
