Doctrines Lesson 22

TULIP

The Five Points of Calvinism

and what does the Bible say about them?

  1. Total Depravity : humans are born totally depraved. Small children are born
evil with no good in them. (V II, p.169 Institutes of Religion). “God orders all things by His council and decree, in such a manner that some men are born devoted from the womb to certain destruction, so that his name may
    be glorified by their destruction.”)

(notes)

  1. Unconditional Election : (double predestination, some are born eternally saved
and others are born eternally lost. (Institutes, V I 2:163) “Whom God passes by He reprobates, andfrom no other cause than His determination to exclude them from the inheritance.)”

(notes)

  1. Limited Atonement :(Christ died only for the elect. He did not die for all humanity.)(Westminster Confession; “ We are taught that Christ died exclusively for the elect, and purchased

    redemption for them alone).

(notes)

  1. Irresistible Grace : (When God decided to make a person one of the elect, his grace cannot be rejected.) (Uses Augustine's doctrine of “Prevenient Grace” to reach this conclusion.)

(notes)

  1. Perseverance of the Saints (Being one of the Predestined elect, it is impossible to

fall from God's Grace. (“No one can take my sheep from me, John 10th Chapter).

    (Once saved always saved)
