D. The Interpretation of the Handwriting. 5: 18-29

1. Mene (50 shekels) + Mene (50 shekels) = 100 shek.

The verb means to number: thus the kingdom was numbered with a value of 100 shekels.

2. Tekel means 1 shekel; the verb from means to weigh: thus the king was weighed in the balance and found only to weigh 1 shekel, far inferior to the 100 shekel kingdom over which he ruled. A 1 shekel king does not measure up to a 100 shekel kingdom and thus God (YHWH) would remove him as king.

3. Peres (from Upharsin = 1/2 shekels in plural); the verb here means to divide; thus the 100 shekel kingdom of Babylon was to be divided up into 1/2 shekels and was to become part of the Medo-Persian Empire.

E. The fall of Babylon (fulfillment of prediction of the handwriting on the wall). 5: 3-31.
