Acts 10 (New American Standard Bible)
Salvation to the Gentiles_______
We reach a new period in the history of salvation and the establishment of God's kingdom on earth. Salvation to the Gentiles was promised in the OT (Isaiah 10:10) for just one prophecy that is fulfilled here with the salvation of Cornelius. Caesarea is the background for this incident. There lived in this town a certain Gentile who was to be the first recorded incident of salvation to Gentiles under the New Covenant. The point I think that Luke is trying to make here is that Cornelius was a very religious man but even so Cornelius was lost. Here are a few facts we find out about Cornelius in verses 1-2.
1. His name was Cornelius
2. He was an army captain or centurion.
3. He was an Italian, as was the cohort over which he had authority.
4. He was a devout man.
5. He feared and worshiped God as did his house.
6. He was very generous with his substance as he gave many gifts to the poor.
He evidently obtained his faith and devotion through close contact with the Jewish religion.
Verses 3-8___
Verse 3__No devotion to YHWH goes unrewarded. While Cornelius was praying, God came to visit. This vision is somewhat different than other visions we have studied. The vision to this Gentile was given "openly" at three o'clock in the evening. Apparently Cornelius saw this angel.
Verse 4-5__The angel tells Cornelius that God has heard him. His worship was not in vain (See 10:31 and also 10:4). The content of Cornelius's prayers we do not know but it may be inferred that Cornelius asked God what it was he needed to do to find salvation. Remember we are looking at a Gentile who has been exposed the the Jewish religion. The answer to his prayers comes in the verse 5. He was to dispatch men to Joppa and summon Peter.
Verses 6-8___Cornelius did more than have a good feeling in his heart. Cornelius obeyed. He sent two of his servants and a devout soldier to Joppa.
Peter's Vision__9-16
|
9On the next day, as they were on their way and approaching the city, Peter went up on the housetop about the sixth hour to pray.10But he became hungry and was desiring to eat; but while they were making preparations, he fell into a trance;11and he saw the sky opened up, and an object like a great sheet coming down, lowered by four corners to the ground,12and there were in it all kinds of four-footed animals and crawling creatures of the earth and birds of the air.13A voice came to him, "Get up, Peter, kill and eat!"14But Peter said, "By no means, Lord, for I have never eaten anything unholy and unclean."15Again a voice came to him a second time, "What God has cleansed, no longer consider unholy."16This happened three times, and immediately the object was taken up into the sky. |
Verse 9___ It is thirty miles from Caesarea to Joppa and from that fact Luke states they arrived at noon the day following the vision at Caesarea. We must conclude that these servants walked all night.
Verses 10-16___ When they arrived they found the household of Simon in prayer. It might be noticed that Peter went to his roof top to observe the Jewish hour of prayer.

As we continue__Peter is on the rooftop praying and God gave him some real food for thought. Before the mind of Peter there came a strange sight. He saw the expanse of heaven opened and a large receptacle let down through the opening. It seemed to be a great sheet suspended from the four corners. It came to rest before the astonished Peter. When saw the contents of the vessel it contained "all manner of four footed beasts and creeping things of the earth and birds of the heaven. Next___"rise Peter, kill and eat. " At once Peter spoke the convictions of his heart in regards to such animals. "Not so Lord" I have never eaten anything unclean." Again the voice of God; and this time it must have shaken the heart of Simon even as the same voice did melt the hearts of those at Sinai. The divine mandate was repeated three times and the vessel was taken back to heaven.
17-20__Peter Perplexed
|
17Now while Peter was greatly perplexed in mind as to what the vision which he had seen might be, behold, the men who had been sent by Cornelius, having asked directions for Simon's house, appeared at the gate;18and calling out, they were asking whether Simon, who was also called Peter, was staying there 19While Peter was reflecting on the vision, the Spirit said to him, "Behold, three men are looking for you.20"But get up, go downstairs and accompany them without misgivings, for I have sent them Myself. |
Verses 17-20___ Peter's Jewish background clouds his vision. Here is the question." Why was it that God revoked the law of clean and unclean animals?" Did God abrogate all of the law of Moses?
But__even while Peter was pondering these great questions men were standing at his door sent from Cornelius. There three messengers inquired for the house of Simon the tanner. The Holy Spirit tells Peter that "three men are looking for him." These men were sent from God.
Verses 21-23a___
|
"21Peter went down to the men and said, "Behold, I am the one you are looking for; what is the reason for which you have come?"22They said, "Cornelius, a centurion, a righteous and God-fearing man well spoken of by the entire nation of the Jews, was divinely directed by a holy angel to send for you to come to his house and hear a message from you."23So he invited them in and gave them lodging. |
Verses 21-23a___Strange things were happening. First a strange vision; next a stranger command; now the strangest of all, Peter is called to speak to an uncircumcised Gentile. The embassaries of Cornelius made the mission as attractive to the Jewish mind as possible. Peter was to come and speak to a Gentile named Cornelius, a righteous man, one who feared God and had a fine reputation among the Jews.
Peter at Caesarea
Verses 23b-27___ The trip was started "in the morning" since it was a two day trip. Six brethren from Joppa were taken on the journey to be witnesses of this unusual event (11:12).
When Peter stepped into the house of Cornelius there was a waiting audience made up of friends and family of Cornelius. Cornelius fell at the feet of Peter recognizing that Peter was sent from God. But Peter refused worship (a lesson for modern Catholics) and stated that he was just a man. Apparently Luke was not told that Peter was supposed to be exalted to a divine status.
Cornelius explains ____28-33
Peter gets right to the point. "How is it that a Jew has been sent to the Gentiles?" Peter removes this query by speaking of the divine had in breaking "the middle wall of partition." God's work had not been in vain. Peter speaks to that. No man is unclean.
Cornelius comes forward and explains his vision. Here is a summation.
1. Cornelius stated that it was four days to the very hour since he had seen an angel. Since the Jewish way of reckoning time was to count a part of a day as a whole day.
2. When Peter reiterated the message of Cornelius to him he might speak things to Cornelius that would save his household.
3. Cornelius informed Peter that they were gathered together to hear these things .
Peter's Sermon___
|
34Opening his mouth, Peter said: "I most certainly understand now that God is not one to show partiality,35but in every nation the man who fears Him and does what is right is welcome to Him. |
Verses 34-35___ All the cards were on the table. There was only one message that Peter could bring. Neither the details of the Jewish law nor the rite of circumcision was needed by the Gentiles.
Verses 36-37___
If salvation was the request then Peter might only speak of the things of Jesus. Yes, Jesus is not just the Lord of the Jews but the Lord of all.
Verses 38-42___(See Acts 1:22 )
Verse 38___Jesus was anointed by God with the Holy Spirit and with power (from the Spirit). Jesus went about healing and casting out demons.
Verse 39___We ____See Acts 1:22 for the qualifications of an apostle___
Peter claims he was a witness to all these things. From the Baptism of John to the death on the cross and _________
Verse 40___We were a witness to the resurrection of Jesus.
Verse 41___The apostles were chosen "beforehand by God," to be witnesses to all these events. That is why:
|
29"My Father, who has given them to Me, is greater than all; and no one is able to snatch them out of the Father's hand. John 10:29___ |
The apostles had a divine mission and nothing could happen to them until their destiny was fulfilled.
Verse 42___ It is Jesus who will judge the living and the dead according to these apostles.
The coming of the Holy Spirit__verses 43-48
|
43"Of Him all the prophets bear witness that through His name everyone who believes in Him receives forgiveness of sins."44While Peter was still speaking these words, the Holy Spirit fell upon all those who were listening to the message.45All the circumcised believers who came with Peter were amazed, because the gift of the Holy Spirit had been poured out on the Gentiles also.46For they were hearing them speaking with tongues and exalting God. Then Peter answered,47"Surely no one can refuse the water for these to be baptized who have received the Holy Spirit just as we did, can he?"48And he ordered them to be baptized in the name of Jesus Christ. Then they asked him to stay on for a few days. |
Verse 43___The prophets told of no other but Jesus.
Verse 44___The Holy Spirit fell on on all those who were listening to the message. Read, "What about speaking in Tongues?"
Verse 45___Since the gift of the Holy Spirit was poured out on the Gentiles allowing the Gentiles to speak in unknown languages___ who were the unbelievers in the crowd?
Verse 46-48__Once convinced, these people were baptized, the only way to salvation.
